VicGrid has identified the preferred route for a shared transmission line that will connect the first 2 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy generated off the Gippsland coast to Victoria's electricity network.

The preferred route is approximately 60 kilometres long and 200 metres wide, extending between the Loy Yang Power Station switchyard and a proposed new terminal station near Giffard.

The preferred route has been refined using environmental, cultural heritage and technical studies, as well as feedback from landholders, community members, businesses and asset owners.

VicGrid has been engaging with the local community, landholders and stakeholders on the project since 2023, identifying a broad study area in 2024 and narrowing it to a draft preferred route in 2025.

Considerations have included farming practices, existing infrastructure, local biodiversity and visual amenity. This feedback has been assessed alongside specialist studies to help identify the preferred route.

The preferred route reduces the number of private properties directly affected from 24 to 20.

VicGrid is meeting with landholders to let them know if they are within the preferred route or may be able to see the transmission infrastructure from their homes or land. These discussions now include indicative transmission tower locations, likely construction activities and an indicative easement.

These details will form part of an early version of the project design, known as a reference design, which will be assessed through the Environment Effects Statement (EES) process. The community will be able to view the reference design when the EES is publicly exhibited in early 2027.

While the preferred route has been identified, final locations for transmission towers and easements will continue to be refined through further technical assessments and consultation.

We will keep working closely with landholders, Traditional Owners, communities and other stakeholders as we progress through the project’s detailed design.
